Perth bubblegum-punk quartet Joanie Get Angry launch their debut EP Engage Your Mandibles and Kiss Me on Friday April 7 at Four5Nine Bar. Recorded at Dirty Merkin Studios, Engage Your Mandibles and Kiss Me is gritty document of Joanie Get Angry’s year-and-a-half in the world: raw, raucous and unrepentant, like an infant yanked from the sonic womb, born ready to kick ass, take names, yell, scream and breathe riffs with unbridled conviction. Engage…’s five tracks strike like a flurry of attitudinal blows to the gut. ‘Just (Because I Want To Hold Your Hand, Doesn’t Mean I Want to Suck Your) Cock’ is a layered dose of feminist power-pop that taps into the best parts of Bikini Kill, while the brazen ‘Fuckpants’ sees vocalist Kristie Butler singing with her tongue so firmly planted in her cheek it’s almost a piercing. But lead single ‘Let’s Have an Affair’ is the real kicker: a straight-forward, vivacious tale of punk rock seduction, brimming with hook-heavy power chords, irresistible rhythms and utter defiance. Live, Joanie Get Angry deliver pure spectacle. Butler is a classic show-woman – strutting across the stage like a garage femme fatale, boasting the poise of Leela and the irreverent gusto of Bender from Futurama – the show from which the EP derives its name. Joanie Get Angry launch Engage Your Mandibles and Kiss Me alongside shirtless ska fiends Them Sharks, 90s indie throwbacks Lionizer launching their single Out of Breath, garage mammals The Surf Rabbits, and pop punk heartthrobs Lions and Lambs. $10 entry from 8pm.
